About the University:
Founded in 1955, this federal Nigerian university admitted its first students in 1960 and became the first university to grant its own degrees in the country. It is also considered the first land-grant university in Africa. Sponsored by a regional government, the original project also benefited from the advice of consultants from British and American universities. Prominently among them was John A. Hanna, at the time president of Michigan State University, who was later accused of letting the CIA involved in the Michigan State University Vietnam Advisory Group, after which he resigned to become the head of USAID.
